Love And All Of Its Opposites
There is this church sign that I see everyday when I am going home. It simply says “LOVE IS A CHOICE”.
I don’t talk a lot about doctrine and specific beliefs, but I must say that love is not a choice. The opposite of love, whatever you want to call that, is a choice. But love…love is a command. When everyone was bugging Jesus and asking Him what the greatest commandment was, Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love is not a choice, it is a command. Something we must do despite what our nature and surroundings tell us to do. When we lose sight of loving God and loving our neighbor, that is when love becomes a choice. Choosing to love is a deception from the creator of the opposite of love. God commands us to love because He doesn’t want us to fall in to those deceptions. The opposite of love is the opposition, the rivalry of our life.
When we decide to love someone we are saying to ourselves “this person is worthy of love” but when we simply love someone we are saying “this person is loved regardless of worth or deservedness”. God commands us to love others this way, free from deservedness and whether or not they are worthy of being loved, because it is the same way He loves us, full of grace.
Love God. Love others. Don’t let the opposite of any of those words get in the way.
